Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Blade Affinity Chart Guide

Speed up Trust, unlock Affinity Rewards, and finish skill trees without endless grinding.

Last updated:

Every Blade in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 carries an affinity chart—a grid of nodes tied to Trust levels, battle milestones, and character interactions. Filling charts unlocks Affinity Rewards, extra passive skills, new Blade Arts, and sometimes quest progress for Rare Blades like KOS-MOS. Empty nodes look harmless early on, but they cap your damage, Luck, and field skill levels by endgame.

This guide explains how Trust rises, which activities fill nodes fastest, and how to prioritize charts when you manage twenty or more Blades.

Affinity chart basics

Open the menu, select Blades, then Affinity Chart for any fighter. Nodes fall into categories:

Trust (heart icons) — Raised by battle participation, pouch items, and Heart-to-Hearts.

Combat (sword icons) — Unlocked by defeating specific enemy types or using certain Arts.

Field (leaf icons) — Completed by using field skills or visiting locations.

Community / Idea nodes — Some charts link to Idea Point categories that also affect Core Crystal pulls.

Affinity Rewards (gift boxes) — Appear at Trust thresholds; contain key items, stat boosts, or lore.

A chart is not complete until every node is lit. Partial completion still grants intermediate skills—always grab pouch-driven Trust first because it fuels everything else.

Trust: the foundation

Trust is the slowest node type if you ignore pouch items. Raise it deliberately:

Battle participation — Active Blades gain Trust when they fight. Keep the Blade you are leveling on-field during normal encounters, not just boss fights.

Favorite pouch items — Each Blade likes specific categories (Desserts, Instruments, Board Games, etc.). Check the Pouch menu for hearts next to item types. Craft or buy favorites and set them in the active Driver pouch while exploring.

Heart-to-Hearts — Scripted conversations between Drivers and Blades. They grant large Trust spikes and sometimes unique nodes. Locations vary by chapter; see the Trust Guide for indexed Heart-to-Heart spots.

Mercenary Missions — Send Blades on timed missions from Torigoth or later hubs. Great for passive Trust on Blades you do not use in combat.

Stack pouch items during long exploration sessions. Trust ticks while you walk, salvage, and complete side quests—do not wait until post-game to start feeding favorites.

Fast chart completion workflow

  1. Pick one Blade per element you actively use in combat.
  2. Set their favorite pouch item before leaving a town.
  3. Run Merc Missions on field-skill Blades while you play the story.
  4. Trigger Heart-to-Hearts whenever icons appear on the map.
  5. Finish combat nodes in areas with dense enemy types (use Monster Manual targets).
  6. Claim Affinity Rewards immediately for items that feed other charts.

Repeat for story Blades first—Pyra, Mythra, Dromarch, Poppi forms, Brighid, Pandoria—because they stay in your party longest and raise Idea Points globally.

Combat and field nodes without wasted time

Combat nodes often say “Defeat X enemy with Y Art.” Efficient methods:

Use the Monster Manual — Track kill counts toward nodes without guessing.

Farm UM enemies in the listed region instead of random overworld mobs.

Switch Blades mid-fight — The active Blade gets credit for Art usage even if you swap to finish combos.

Field nodes may require N level Field Skill on a Blade. If your Blade’s skill level is too low, fill prerequisite chart nodes or raise Trust first—skill tiers gate many exploration checks.

Cross-reference Rare Blades if a chart node references a Blade you have not unlocked yet. Quest Blades sometimes hide nodes until their recruitment quest advances.

Heart-to-Hearts and Driver pairs

Heart-to-Hearts require specific Driver + Blade pairs and location markers. Missing prerequisites—story chapter, Trust level, or prior conversation—silently hides them.

General rules:

  • Rex pairs with Pyra, Mythra, and many Rare Blades.
  • Nia needs her Driver form for some late Heart-to-Hearts.
  • Tora and Poppi share unique Poppi-specific scenes.
  • Mòrag and Brighid, Zeke and Pandoria have paired sets.

Finish story Heart-to-Hearts before New Game Plus if you want one continuous run. The Walkthrough flags major story gates so you do not advance chapters while icons are still available in old zones.

Affinity Rewards worth prioritizing

Not every reward is equal. Prioritize:

Luck and Dexterity boosts on Blades used for Core Crystals farming.

Aggro reduction on Healers and burst DPS Blades that steal enemy attention.

Field skill +1 on exploration specialists before visiting new Titans.

Overdrive-related items when they appear—moving top Blades between Drivers transforms party flexibility.

Key items for Rare Blade quests — KOS-MOS and Sheba chains check affinity categories; delaying Trust slows entire quest lines.

Multi-Blade management tips

Late game roster bloat is real. Stay organized:

  • Mark completed charts on the Blade Checklist.
  • Run Merc Missions on duplicate-role Blades you never fight.
  • Feed pouch items to one Blade per Driver at a time to avoid inventory drain.
  • Use Affinity Assist items from Challenge Mode or rare drops for final Trust levels.

Do not max every Blade before finishing the story unless you enjoy completionism. Story Blades plus one Rare Blade per missing element is enough for Starter Party Build comfort.

Common mistakes

Ignoring pouch items — Slowest Trust path; always run favorites.

Bench swapping every fight — Inactive Blades gain less Trust; pick a core trio per Driver.

Skipping Heart-to-Hearts for rare loot — Large Trust chunks lost forever until New Game Plus in some cases.

Spreading Merc Missions randomly — Focus missions matching Blade element or region for bonus completion.

Forgetting Poppi — Poppi α, β, QT, and QTπ have separate charts; each form needs investment for full Poppi Build Guide potential.

Affinity and endgame power

Filled charts multiply the value of Tier List picks. Mythra without nodes is still good; Mythra with everything unlocked is Challenge-ready. Driver Combos from the Combat Guide also assume Blades have Arts unlocked via chart progress.

When preparing Endgame Builds, audit charts for your main DPS and support Blades first. Support nodes on Vale or Brighid often outperform chasing another random Legendary pull.

Affinity is a marathon system disguised as side content. Start pouch habits in Chapter 2, run Merc Missions whenever you return to town, and treat Heart-to-Hearts as mandatory stops—not optional flavor text.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What is the fastest way to raise Blade Trust?

Equip favorite pouch items on the active Driver, keep the Blade in battle, and trigger Heart-to-Hearts when they appear. Mercenary Missions passively raise Trust on benched Blades.

Do all Blades need full affinity charts?

Only if you want maximum stats, Affinity Rewards, or Rare Blade quest completion. Story completion needs partial investment on your main fighters; completionists aim for 100%.

Can I fill affinity charts in New Game Plus?

Yes. Charts persist, and NG+ lets you re-trigger some Heart-to-Hearts or farm nodes with stronger parties. Overdrive also helps move Blades to optimal Drivers.

Why are some affinity nodes locked?

Nodes may require higher Trust, story progress, specific enemy kills, or prior nodes on the chart. Rare Blade quests sometimes lock nodes until quest stages advance.

Does Trust affect Core Crystal pulls?

Indirectly. Filled charts raise Idea Points and category bonuses that shift Legendary pull tables. Luck nodes on Blades also help when that Blade participates in farming.
