Merc Missions Guide

What Merc Missions are

Merc Missions are timed dispatch tasks in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 that send Blades away from your active combat party to complete jobs across Alrest. While a mission runs, you continue fighting, exploring, or advancing story elsewhere. When the timer finishes, collect rewards including trust, items, gold, and sometimes materials used for affinity or shops.

Merc Missions connect directly to Merc Groups — regional guilds in major cities — and to Community Level, which unlocks better shops and new mission tiers. They also feed Idea Points that influence Rare Blade pull tables from Core Crystals. Understanding Merc Missions early prevents trust bottlenecks and speeds Rare Blade hunting in mid and late game.

This guide covers unlock timing, mission mechanics, Affinity Chart automation, and how base-game Merc Missions differ from Switch 2 Merc Assault.

Unlocking the Merc Group

The Merc Group system opens during early story progression once you reach Torigoth, Gormott, and complete the introductory quest chain that introduces Vandham and mercenary work. After the tutorial mission, access Merc Missions from the main menu:

Menu (+) → Merc Group → Merc Missions

Each major nation — Gormott, Mor Ardain, Uraya, Leftheria, and others — has its own Merc Group rank and Community Level tracked separately. Visit Guild halls in hub cities after each chapter to accept new listings and turn in completed jobs.

If the menu option is gray, advance the main walkthrough until Vandham’s early mercenary tutorial completes. Merc Missions are not post-game content; they appear within the first few hours.

How mission timers work

Assign one or more Blades to a mission with a listed duration — often 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or longer for premium rewards. Timers count down in real time while the game is running, including when you fight manual battles, watch cutscenes, or fast travel. Closing the game pauses timers until you resume.

You can run multiple missions simultaneously if enough Blades are available. Avoid sending every Blade with a critical field skill you need for the next exploration segment. Keep at least one Lockpicking or Focus specialist in reserve if your route passes locked doors.

Higher Merc Group ranks unlock longer missions with better trust payouts and rare items. Revisit Guild boards after story beats and whenever Community Level rises.

Rewards: trust, items, and Idea Points

Mission completion grants:

  • Trust for assigned Blades — essential for Affinity Chart progress
  • Gold and consumables
  • Idea Points in categories like Justice, Compassion, Truth, and others
  • Occasionally collectibles or affinity items

Idea Points shift your Core Crystal pull bias toward Blades matching your highest categories. Players hunting specific Rare Blades should rotate missions that reward the Ideas tied to their target element or character type. Cross-reference Core Crystals for how Ideas interact with Legendary pulls.

Trust from missions complements pouches and Heart-to-Hearts without requiring combat participation from benched Blades.

Affinity Chart automation

Many Affinity Chart nodes require actions that Merc Missions can satisfy automatically — completing specific mission types, earning trust thresholds, or finishing regional task counts. Read chart nodes before assigning Blades; some missions explicitly count toward node progress when the correct Blade is dispatched.

This automation is why collectors send bench Blades on missions constantly. A Blade you never use in battle can still reach S-rank trust and fill chart nodes while your main trio clears story content.

Pair mission schedules with the Trust Guide pouch routine for fastest chart completion.

Community Level and regional growth

Each region tracks Community Level increased by finishing Merc Missions and related development tasks. Higher community unlocks:

  • New mission tiers with better rewards
  • Shop inventory upgrades
  • Occasionally story-adjacent side content

Spread missions across regions instead of maxing only Gormott. Later Titans introduce missions with materials you cannot obtain elsewhere. The Money and Farming Guide notes which missions pay best when you need gold and trust simultaneously.

Merc Missions versus Switch 2 Merc Assault

These are different systems:

Merc Missions (base game) — Menu dispatch with real-time timers. Passive trust and items. Available on all platforms.

Merc Assault (Switch 2 Edition) — Active six-Blade action mode unlocked at Merc Group HQ in Garfont, Uraya, via Vandham’s Other Ask. See the dedicated Merc Assault guide for unlock steps, Yew NPC dialogue, and Pyra/Mythra outfit rewards.

Merc Assault does not replace Merc Missions. You can run dispatch timers while separately playing Assault scenarios for cosmetics and combat practice.

Planning Blade assignments

Before sending Blades:

  1. Check upcoming exploration for required field skills
  2. Prioritize low-trust Blades that need chart nodes
  3. Match mission element or role recommendations when listed
  4. Stagger timer lengths so rewards arrive during camp breaks

Do not send your only healer Blade if the next boss is imminent. Do send Rare Blades stuck at D-rank that you plan to Overdrive to another Driver later — trust follows the Blade, not the Driver assignment during missions.

Mid-game and post-game Merc loops

During Chapters 4–7, start long missions before lengthy story sessions. In post-game, Merc Missions remain a steady trust source while farming unique monsters or Challenge content. New Game Plus resets some community progress depending on version — verify regional ranks after starting a second run.

Common mistakes

Sending all field-skill Blades at once blocks exploration. Ignoring Idea Point rewards wastes pull optimization. Letting timers sit unclaimed after completion delays the next assignment slot. Confusing Merc Assault with Merc Missions leads players on Switch 2 to overlook passive dispatch entirely.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How do I access Merc Missions in Xenoblade Chronicles 2?

Open Menu (+) → Merc Group → Merc Missions after the early Vandham tutorial in Gormott. Accept jobs at Guild halls in major cities.

Do Merc Mission timers run while I fight?

Yes. Timers count down during normal gameplay while the game is running. They pause when the game is closed.

What are Idea Points from Merc Missions?

Idea Points influence Rare Blade pull rates from Core Crystals. Different missions reward different Idea categories.

Is Merc Assault the same as Merc Missions?

No. Merc Missions are passive dispatch timers in the base game. Merc Assault is a Switch 2 Edition action mode — see [Merc Assault](/switch-2-edition/merc-assault/).

Can Merc Missions raise Affinity Chart nodes?

Yes. Many nodes count mission completions or trust gained from missions. Assign the correct Blade before dispatching.
