What Switch 2 Edition outfits add

The Switch 2 Edition update for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 introduces new cosmetic outfits for Pyra and Mythra, the Aegis Blades central to Rex’s story. Outfits change field and battle appearance without altering stats, Affinity, or Arts power. Collectors and role-play fans can customize the Aegis while using the same builds and combat controls as before.

These styles are exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 hardware running the Switch 2 Edition patch. They do not appear on original Switch hardware or unpatched saves. Once unlocked, you can toggle between classic and new looks at any time from Game Settings.

Two unlock paths — choose either one

You only need one method to unlock both Pyra and Mythra new styles. Nintendo designed the feature so amiibo owners and gameplay-only players reach the same result:

  1. Pyra or Mythra amiibo — scan either figure once through the in-game amiibo menu.
  2. One Merc Assault mission — after unlocking Merc Assault at Merc Group HQ in Garfont, Uraya, complete a single mission to receive the outfit reward.

There is no separate grind for Pyra versus Mythra styles, no rank ladder, and no need to finish multiple scenarios unless you want extra Merc Assault rewards unrelated to cosmetics.

Amiibo unlock path

Press + to open the system menu, select System, then amiibo. Hold a Pyra or Mythra amiibo to the NFC touchpoint on your Joy-Con or Pro Controller. Scanning either figure unlocks the New Style options for both Aegis forms in one step.

Amiibo scans also grant bonus items such as WP, SP, or Ether Crystals depending on the figure. The game allows up to three amiibo scans per day, so plan scans around daily play if you collect multiple figures. If a scan fails, confirm NFC is enabled, remove screen protectors from the controller touchpoint, and retry from a safe indoor location away from combat.

You do not need both Pyra and Mythra figures. One scan of either amiibo is sufficient for the full outfit unlock.

Merc Assault unlock path

Players without amiibo can unlock the same styles through gameplay. First reach Merc Group HQ in Garfont Village during natural chapter pacing in Uraya. Open the Merc Group menu and launch Merc Assault. Pick up to six Blades, run one mission to completion, and the game awards New Style Pyra/Mythra as a special reward.

You do not need high scores, repeat clears, or multiple mission types. A single successful run is enough. This makes the Merc path one of the fastest cosmetic unlocks in the Switch 2 Edition update if you already have six capable Blades from story progression or MOMO recruitment.

Switching outfits anytime after unlock

After either unlock path completes, open +SystemOptionsGame Settings. At the bottom of the list, toggle New Style Pyra and New Style Mythra independently. You can flip these on or off whenever you like — during exploration, between battles, or before cutscenes — with no cooldown or cost.

Classic and new styles apply in both field gameplay and supported cutscenes. Switch back to default looks before a story moment if you prefer the original art direction, then re-enable new styles afterward. The toggles persist across save loads and New Game Plus carry-over.

Performance and presentation notes

Switch 2 hardware handles the additional costume assets with minimal load impact. For frame-rate context beyond cosmetics, see the performance guide. Crowded Titan zones still favor readable silhouettes during Chain Attacks, but outfit swaps do not hide enemy telegraphs — important for boss strategies.

If you notice texture pop-in after toggling styles mid-session, fast travel to the same area once to refresh assets.

Synergy with other Switch 2 content

Outfits are independent of MOMO recruitment or Torna DLC rewards. NG+ players can unlock cosmetics quickly by rushing to Uraya for one Merc Assault clear while retaining endgame Blades for the scenario.

Collecting efficiently

Because both unlock paths grant the same result, pick whichever is faster for your setup. Amiibo owners can unlock during the first camp visit after patching. Everyone else should prioritize reaching Garfont Merc HQ rather than farming unrelated side content.

After unlocking, experiment with toggles during combat controls practice so you know which style you prefer before difficult walkthrough bosses.

Spoiler-safe usage

Changing Mythra outfits does not spoil story beats, but new styles reference updated Aegis designs. Avoid Game Settings previews if you want zero aesthetic spoilers before late Uraya events noted in chapter pacing.

Streaming and screenshot tips

Photo Mode captures outfits best in open Gormott fields or Argentum docks with clean backgrounds. Disable UI clutter in system options before screenshots. Toggle new styles on before recording Merc Assault runs if you want consistent visuals across commentary segments.

Share cosmetic goals with friends; unlike stat gear from Blades guides, outfits are pure flair.

Returning to standard play after collecting

After unlocking and setting preferred styles, return to the Switch 2 Edition hub checklist and resume main walkthrough objectives. Cosmetics are satisfying collectibles, but Affinity Chart progress and core setups still drive combat success more than appearance alone.
