Without Overdrive, each Driver bonds Blades separately through Core Crystal pulls — a Blade pulled on Rex stays on Rex until you release it or use Overdrive.
Overdrive solves roster flexibility problems: moving a Luck Blade to your farming Driver, shifting a healer to Nia, or consolidating your best DPS Rare onto Rex for Master Driver compatibility. Story Blades like Pyra and Mythra follow different rules and generally cannot be Overdriven freely.

When Overdrive unlocks

Once available, Overdrive appears as a key item consumed from the Blade menu when selecting Transfer. Confirm you want the transfer — the Protocol is spent on success.

Poppi units and artificial Blades follow separate rules — Overdrive applies to natural Rare Blades from Core Crystals and quest rewards, not Poppi α/β customization.

Treasure Troves in late-game zones — Spirit Crucible Elpys, Temperantia high-level areas, and World Tree approaches often hide chests with Protocols or trade materials.
Shop stock — Some vendors sell Overdrive Protocols for high gold prices after progression milestones. Check Mor Ardain, Tantal, and post-game shops after refreshing inventory.

Release + reroll destroys the Blade and returns a Core Crystal booster. Use release when a pull is duplicate or permanently bench-worthy. Trust investment is lost — painful for partially charted Blades.
Overdrive preserves all investment while changing Driver host. Use when the Blade is valuable but on the wrong Driver.
New pull on target Driver — Bond fresh crystals directly on the Driver you want. Ideal early when trust investment is minimal. Late game, re-pulling a specific Rare Blade is unrealistic RNG.

Endgame Endgame Builds often assume one optimized Luck Driver and one optimized DPS Driver. Overdrive lets you converge there without re-pulling.

- Hoard three to five Protocols before spending on experimental transfers
- Transfer Luck and healer Blades first — highest return per item
- Do not Overdrive story Blades or Poppi units
